Senior health challenges and treatments in Dr. Franklin Panchakarma

Getting older will cause various health-related issues.Old age is viewed as an unavoidable, undesirable and problem-ridden phase of life. Problems of aging usually appear after the age of 65 years. Some of the age-related problems are:

1. Arthritis

There are different kinds of Arthritis, each with different symptoms and treatments. Arthritis can attack joints in almost any part of the body. Millions of adults and half of all people age 65 and older are troubled by this disease. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis in older people. OA starts when cartilage begins to become ragged and wears away. At OA's worst, all of the cartilage in a joint wears away, leaving bones that rub against each other. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease. In RA, that means your body attacks the lining of a joint just as it would if it were trying to protect you from injury or disease. RA leads to inflammation in your joints. This inflammation causes pain, swelling, and stiffness that can last for hours.

2. Vision Loss

Presbyopia is a slow loss of ability to see close objects or small print. It is a normal process that happens as you get older. Holding the newspaper at arm's length is a sign of presbyopia. Reading glasses usually fix the problem.Cataracts are cloudy areas in the eye's lens causing loss of eyesight. Cataracts often form slowly without any symptoms. Some stay small and don't change eyesight very much. Others may become large or dense and harm vision.

Glaucoma comes from too much pressure from fluid inside the eye. Over time, the pressure can hurt the optic nerve. This leads to vision loss and blindness. Most people with glaucoma have no early symptoms or pain from the extra pressure. You can protect yourself by having annual eye exams that include dilation of the pupils.

3. Hypercholesterolemia and Heart diseases:

Hypercholesterolemia means the presence of a high volume of bad cholesterol in the blood. For more details check our previous blog How to treat hypercholesterolemia? As a chronic condition, heart disease affects 37 percent of men and 26 percent of women 65 and older, according to the Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics. As people age, they're increasingly living with risk factors, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, that increase the chances of having a stroke or developing heart disease.

4.Respiratory Diseases:

Bronchial Asthma is common in the elderly and is an increasingly serious health issue. Bronchial asthma is essentially a chronic airway inflammatory disorder characterized by airway hyper-reactivity to a number of non-specific stimuli leading to variable airway obstruction which is chiefly reversible with medications but which may become irreversible over years. Asthma in elderly is underdiagnosed and consequently undertreated. Diagnosis is complex as most of the prevalence of a number of comorbidities and there is a significant degree of overlap in the elderly with another obstructive airway disease, called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

5. Alzheimer's disease:

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, a progressive brain disorder that diminishes an individual's thinking skills. Alzheimer's is a degenerative brain disease that usually begins gradually, causing a person to forget recent events or familiar tasks. It eventually causes memory loss, disorientation, confusion, personality and behavior changes, and impaired judgment.
