Formation or Evolution of panchamahabhoothas begins with the union of two components called prakrithi and purusha. They can only be inferred and can’t be perceived directly. Everything that is known to us has developed from the ‘avyaktha prakruti’ (fundamental cause). Prakruti is having three qualities named as ‘satwa’,’rajas’, and ‘thamas’. It becomes active only by the presence of ‘purusha’. The interaction of both ‘purusha’ and ‘prakruti’ is the first step in the process of evolution or making of anything.
Prakrithi (primitive matter) unites with Purusha (Perception) to form the first stage of evolution named as Mahat. Mahat then transforms to identity of individual elements named as Ahamkara. Ahamkara is having three distinct parts helps to enlighten, compel and prevail. The first two parts combine to form mind, sensory and motor organs of an individual. The second and third parts combine to form five types of fine molecules. They further combine to form five elements named as panchamahabhootha.
The five basic elements are named as
• Akasha (ether)
• Vayu (air)
• Tejas (fire)
• Jala (water)
• Prithvi (earth)
All materials on the earth contain Panchamahabhuthas in different proportions. They are having many properties and functions. We are a composite of these five primary elements and certain elements are seen to have an ability to combine to create various physiological functions.
Properties of akasha -Light, minute, clear, soft and inactive

Akasha is not responsible for the production of any taste.
Properties of vayu -Light, rough, minute and clear
Relation of vayu with senses/sense organs of the body-Touch (Skin)

Body activities caused by vayu - all movements and pulsations in the body
Vayu is responsible for the production of astringent and bitter tastes.
Properties of tejas - Light, rough, minute, clear and sharp
Relation of tejas with senses/sense organs of the body -Vision (Eye)
Body activities caused by tejas -Whole body metabolism
Tejas is responsible for the production of pungent, sour and salty tastes.
Properties of jala -Heavy, fluid, slimy, soft and inactive
Relation of jala with senses/sense organs of the body-Taste (Tongue)
Body parts formed with jala- Body and fluids
Jala is responsible for the production of sweet, astringent, salty and sour tastes.
Properties of prithvi- Heavy, rough, firm, hard and inactive
Relation of prithvi with senses/sense organs of the body- Smell (Nose)

Prithvi is responsible for the production of sweet and astringent tastes.
